So, you’ve hired an excellent candidate — now what???
It’s time to get that new hire up-to-speed and truly feeling like part of the team! Onboarding isn’t just about the paperwork; it’s your big chance to help them find their place and purpose at your company.
At the latest TeamKC Roundtable, recruiters and HR pros gathered to swap best practices and fresh ideas for the onboarding process, sharing insights to make that critical first experience engaging and effective.
Check out the highlights from the conversation:
Onboard in Batches
For companies that hire in volume, set fixed start dates and bring people in together. Cohort onboarding keeps things manageable, whether it’s full-time employees or interns. Rolling start dates? Not today!
Leverage Support
Admit it — admin work and tech issues can be a major time-suck. Get office coordinators, IT members or similar support staff involved in handling logistics, so your team can focus on building connections and culture.
Build in a Friend
Did you know 83% of Gen Z believe mentorship is essential for their growth? (Thanks, TeamKC 2024 Scouting Report!) Set your new hires up with a mentor from another department to create that safe space for questions, advice and insider tips.
Check in + Collect Data
Those 30/60/90-day check-ins aren’t just nice-to-haves. These touchpoints, paired with onboarding surveys, give you a pulse on new hires’ experiences. Use this data to fine-tune your process — and, hey, maybe keep a few surprises from popping up in year-end evaluations.
Set Manager Expectations
Keep standard operating procedures consistent, and make sure managers know what’s expected. Are they new to managing people? Consider leadership training for those freshly promoted folks so they’re ready to handle feedback, corrective actions and all things compliance.
Don’t Forget the Special Touches
Little things count, so add some flair! Welcome events can help new hires meet each other and can go a long way in building connections and confidence. Distributing swag on the first day can get employees excited early. Pro tip: A branded pin allows employees to rep your company on any outfit!
And the session’s most important takeaway? Go a step further when you can. New hires remember how they’re welcomed, so err on the side of making them feel seen and supported right from the start –– this includes getting connected within the community. Reach out to TeamKC for support with taking belonging to the next level.
